Edge of Fate, Renegades, Prophecy, oh my! (Destiny 2's Year 8 + 9)

Year of Prophecy: Key Art
Year of Prophecy: Key Art

Bit of a shorter article this time, but I felt it was essentially for me to at least give some insight into the new Destiny 2 livestream. May 6th 2025 saw the grand reveal of the next year of Destiny 2's life, the Year of Prophecy. This year will contain the expansions titled Edge of Fate and Renegades. The stream contained more in depth looks into Edge of Fate, Ash and Iron, and general QOL updates starting on July 15th:

July 15th: Edge of Fate / Beginning of Year 8

Edge of Fate begins the next multi-year Destiny saga, known as the Fate Saga. Clearly finally dealing with the mysterious 'Nine' that has been in the background since 2017, we will be exploring completely unknown worlds and possibly even playing with time. With the new character named Lodi entering the story via a modern day Chicago metro train and landing on Keplar, Bungie has promised to bring back the 'mystery' of the Destiny story and it seems to be off to a great start so far. What story beats happen during the expansion are being held close to the chest, and that makes the wait even harder.

Alongside Edge of Fate comes many gameplay and quality of life updates. Introducing the 'Portal', a new way for many Destiny players can engage with content regardless of how much time they have to set aside per day. Solo play and fireteam play give plenty of options with many types of activities to engage with, such as strikes, battlegrounds, and even exotic missions.

September 9th: Ash and Iron

The first free major update for the year comes shortly after Edge of Fate. Named 'Ash and Iron', not much in terms of story is known as of now. However, we DO know that we will finally be returning to the fan favorite Plaguelands. left behind in the transition from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2. Will we finally be seeing the return of SIVA? Maybe the best raid, Wrath of Machine? One can only dream, but for now that's all we have to go on.

December 2nd: Renegades

In a rather shocking reveal, an expansion inspired by Star Wars is making its way into the game in December. Unlike what many people seem to believe, beit from lack of reading or ineptitude, the expansion isn't a crossover. The story will remain canon to the game's story, and just takes notes from the world of Star Wars for the way the area and weapons are designed.

Personally, the premise is maybe the more enticed I've been for a Destiny expansion since the Witch Queen. In Renegades, we will make our way through a criminal underworld and investigate rumors of a new Dredgen, the infamous rogue Guardian from lore. A stream dedicated to the expansion comes on September 9th, but even now, I am fully on board and arguably more excited for this than Edge of Fate.

March 3rd, 2026: Shadow and Order

Practically nothing is known about this update, other than the title and the release date. More will come with the September 9th stream, so until then we just have a pretty cool name to go with

Summer 2026: Shattered Cycle

Not even a release date on this one, just the name. Probably about the Dreaming City curse? No idea honestly

Winter 2026: The Alchemist

No clue what this one means. Your guess is as good as mine.

Honestly, this stream quiet down a lot of the questions/critiques I had going into this year. After the absolute masterpiece that was The Final Shape, I really wasn't sure where the story would go or what it could do to keep me interested. It'll take a minute for me to get accustomed to the Nine and their conflict, but with time I'm sure it'll happen, as it has before. Additionally, the concept of 'Frontier's as it was previously known left me a BIT skeptical. Doing away with the large major expansions was a choice I didn't agree with originally. Knowing now that these are going to be 'Rise of Iron' sized, with actually interesting stories and great looking new locations, I am seated and waiting for what this year has to bring.
